Breakdown Playlist

[2025][Exhibition Graphics][

Breakdown Playlist brings together works by sixteen artists from China and Switzerland. Developed through the Embassy of Switzerland in China's CH><CN Studio programme, the exhibition is part of the cultural exchange celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Switzerland.

A few years ago, I visited Inside-Out Museum for the first time. The galleries were so large that they echoed, and I expected the exhibitions to feel formal and restrained. Instead, they were full of curiosity and playfulness. I remember thinking that the people behind them must have a deep curiosity about art.

In 2025, I had the opportunity to design the visual identity for Breakdown Playlist. It turned out to be just as distinctive as I had imagined — a project that kept being rewritten, evolving, and growing throughout the process.

The exhibition originally set out to explore the idea of efficiency. As curators and artists from China and Switzerland worked together, subtle misalignments kept emerging through differences in language, culture, and lived experience. Eventually, the curators decided to focus on those very moments of interruption.

I found this process deeply moving. It reminded me of two people talking until they ran out of words in search of common ground, only to sit quietly together instead. Or of a long journey interrupted by a broken-down car, where, instead of rushing to move on, you stop and listen to a song.

I wanted to bring this process into the visual identity. The title is built from lines and dots that pause and change direction, echoing the repeated moments of interruption and transition throughout the process. The imagery of records and clocks gradually found its way into the system; both relate to time, yet carry different rhythms. Structured frameworks coexist with more irregular elements, responding to the differences and interactions that emerged throughout the collaboration.
