Clotheslines once represented a universal urban phenomenon. With the push for city beautification and the rise of modern dry-cleaning services, they are gradually disappearing from daily life. Both their emergence and disappearance reveal social and cultural forces worth reflecting on.

The clothesline also embodies a tension between the private and the public. Intimate garments and domestic traces are displayed openly in shared urban space, exposing the negotiation between personal life and collective order. Their removal underlines this conflict between private expression and public regulation.

To amplify this overlooked detail, I created a series of simulated installations. In museums, glass covers often mark the boundary between ordinary objects and artworks. By enclosing these works under glass, I reframed the clothesline as an artifact—transforming the tension between private and public into a collective object for reflection.


晾衣绳曾经是城市里随处可见的日常景象。随着城市美化政策的实施,以及干洗服务的普及,它逐渐从我们的生活中消失。这种出现与消失,本身就是值得被关注的社会现象。晾衣绳同时连接着私人和公共。贴身衣物和家庭的痕迹被挂在公共空间里,既是个人生活的延伸,也是公共秩序的一部分。它的消失,正说明了私人表达与公共规范之间的矛盾。为了放大这一细节,我制作了一系列模拟装置。在美术馆里,玻璃罩常常让普通物品获得“艺术品”的身份。我把晾衣绳放进玻璃罩中,让这种私人与公共之间的张力,以另一种方式被看见和思考。
